Chinese send 2.1b text messages per day 2009

Text messages sent by Chinese people in 2009 rose 8.4 percent year-on-year to 784.04 billion, or 2.1 billion per day on average, the Beijing Times reported Saturday citing a source with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

The report said 86 percent of the short messages were sent by subscribers of China Mobile, the country's leading mobile carrier.

Text messages sent by wireless phones dropped 45.6 percent year-on-year to 12.74 billion because of the withdrawal of Xiaolingtong, or personal handphone system. The figure for mobile phones increased 10.2 percent year-on-year to 771.3 billion, the report said.
